The
Harlot's Progress. Plate V. The Death.
1732.
In
a squalid room, where Moll sits dying in a chair, two doctors argue
over the efficacy of their respective pills and potions. The one
on the left is Dr. Richard Rock, who was known to sell pills for curing
venereal disease. The one on the right is modelled on the lean
figure of a well known French Doctor, Dr. Jean Misaubin. Beside
the chair Moll's old maid tries to quell the commotion, but the two
doctors continue to squabble unawares, even though Moll is
probably already dead. Her young son sits by the fire turning
over a piece of toast. |
