The Harlot's Progress.  Plate IV.  The Harlot in Bridewell.  1732.

Moll has been sentenced to hard labour in Bridewell, a notorious prison of the time.  She has to beat hemp with a mallet, a process used for producing rope.  She is clearly not appropriately dressed for this task.  The prison warder directs her to continue working, while his one eyed wife steals a bit of Moll's lace collar from her dress.  To Moll's right there is a card sharp, two other women and what appears to be a Down's syndrome child.     Then a supposedly pregnant  black woman,  also beating hemp.  Probably Hogarth intends to depict the horror of these places, with all manner of impoverished and depraved humanity swept up and confined to the mercy of cruel warders and meaningless correction.  Moll's pox ridden maid seems to be trying on Moll's shoes with great delight.  On the wall there is an image of Sir John Gonson strung up on the gallows.
