After
her comparative success, Moll is now reduced to a more squalid life
style in the Covent Garden area.
Above the bed is the wig box of James Dalton, a convicted
highwayman. Her heroes, pictured on the wall, are MackHeath, a
rogue from the Beggar's
opera, and Dr. Sacheveral, a character who has been variously
identified as a Tory divine or William Sacheverell (Wikipedia).
The latter attribution seems unlikely, as he was a politician who
died in 1691, and was rabidly anti Catholic, so it is not clear why
Moll should worship him. The witches hat and birch twigs above
her head are suggestive of occult or sadistic practices. In the
background the magistrate Sir John Gonson is entering the room with
three armed constables, intending to arrest Moll for disorderly
conduct. Gonson was well known for his crusade against
immorality in London and for the harsh sentences he imposed on those
whom he deemed to have transgressed. Moll is attended by an old maid who seems to be herself suffering from the pox. On the table there is a sheet of paper headed 'Pastoral Letter', but I cannot determine the significance of it. The watch that dangles from Moll's hand was probably purloined from one of her customers, and she no doubt intends to sell or pawn it. |
