William Hogarth 1697 - 1764.
Alma Mater 1736/7
A satire depicting an Oxford University lecture. The character reading the lecture is said to be a Mr. Fisher of Jesus College, registrar of the University. The portrait was done with his consent. The standards of scholarship in those days were evidently fairly low. Datur vacuum may be translated as 'a vacuum is granted'. The print is also known as 'Scholars at a Lecture'. | ||
