William Hogarth 1697 - 1764.

Times of the Day - Noon.    1738.

The scene is set at the door of the French Church, in Hog Lane, St. Giles.  The church of St. Giles in the Fields is shown in the background.  Emerging from the church are a group of Huguenots.  Being French, they are made to look rather foolish, as Hogarth detested that nation.  (See the Gates of Calais print.)  The two inn signs depict The Good Man and The Good Woman.  The former shows only the man's head, since that was thought to be the only good part of him, the latter shows a headless woman, since if she had her head, she would spend the time nagging.  Opposite the French churchgoers a child has broken a pudding basin and dropped the pudding, which a child on the ground eagerly devours.  A servant girl carrying a pie is embraced by a black man.  There is a dead cat lying in the gutter.  The significance of the kite attached to the wall of the church is uncertain.
