William Hogarth 1697 - 1764.
Times
of the Day - Morning.
1738.
This is the first of a set of four engravings published by Hogarth in 1738. It shows a scene in Covent Garden, with a woman probably on her way to church, passing a scene of riotous beaus and market saleswomen. She is followed by a servant. The beauty spots on the woman's face indicate she was a Whig, for, apparently, in those days Whig and Tory patched differently. Tom King's Coffee House was notorious for its revelry. There appears to be a fight in progress. The two beaus have probably just emerged from it. The man holding the placard is Dr. Rock, a quack who sold medicines which would cure anything and everything. The marks in the snow are of pattens, wooden cradles fixed under shoes to lift the walker higher above the mud and dirt of the street. | ||
