Times of the Day - Evening. 1738.

	A man and his wife and family are visiting a country inn. The horns of the cow which is being milked in the background make him look like a cuckold. The family are evidently escaping the heat of the city on a late Sunday afternoon and calling at a suburban inn, The Middleton, named after the man who brought piped water to London at enormous cost. Sadlers Wells was originally opened as a spa in Islington, which was then a rural area. It then becan#me a house of cheap entertainment, with jugglers, rope dancers, clowns and the like. The boy seems to be unable to defend himself against his shrewish sister who is demanding the gingerbread man from him.

Source: Hogarth's Works published by J. Dicks, 313 The Strand, London. Circa 1880.
The original paintings Morning and Night are now in the National Trust Bearsted Collection at Upton House, in Warwickshire. The collection was assembled by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted and gifted to the Trust, along with the house, in 1948. Noon and Evening remain in the Ancaster Collection at Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincolnshire.
