Taste in High Life; or Dress in 1742
The original painting for this work is said to have been commissioned by a Miss Edwards, a spinster of large fortune, who having been ridiculed for some peculiarities in her own manners, hired the great social moralist to "take off" her tormentors. The subject is professedly intended to ridicule the then manners of high life. The pair on the right appear to be extolling the beauty of a china teabowl and saucer. The man is particularly foppishly dressed, wearing a long queue, a large muff, and a sword buried in his clothing. The monkey servant holds a ridiculous menu. The young woman is tickling the chin of a blackamoor servant, these servants being a desirable status symbol of the time. The black spots on the faces of the women are beauty spots, deliberately applied. | ||
