The Laughing Audience 1733
Hogarth shows us here an audience of theatre goers at one of the Theatres Royal. The three figures in the foreground are the musicians. Behind them are eleven spectators in the pit, where tickets were cheapest. Most of them are highly amused by the performance. Above them are two fops in what was probably a side box. One of them is offering snuff to a lady, another is chatting up an orange seller. Another orange seller below tries to attract his attention, or perhaps tries to pick his pocket. | ||
