William Hogarth 1697 - 1764.

Finis, or The Tail Piece.  March 1764

This is Hogarth's last work.  The first idea of the subject is said to have come to him while drinking with friends.  "My next undertaking shall be the end of all things."  "If that is the case," replied one of his friends, "your business will be finished, for there will be an end of the painter."  "There will so," replied Hogarth, "therefore the sooner my work is done, the better."  The print depicts old father time, himself breathing his last, amidst the wreckage of all things that humans value, bell, bottle, an inn, a church, a pipe, a crown, a musket, even a painter's palette and one of Hogarth's own prints.  Phoebus the sun god, tumbles from the sky and the world crawls to its ending.  He died in October of the same year.
