The Rake's Progress.  Plate III.  The Orgy at the Rose Tavern.  1735.

Hogarth first achieved fame as an artist through his series of moralistic engravings, commencing with  A Harlot's Progress in 1731.  This was followed by A Rake's Progress in 1735, Marriage ŕ-la-mode in 1743-5 and Industry and Idleness in 1747 .  Originally the sets of pictures were  oil paintings which Hogarth subsequently published as engravings.  They met with huge success and many copies were printed.  The original paintings of A Rake's Progress are extant and are displayed in Sir John Soane's Museum, London.

The next scene depicts Tom Rakewell enjoying an inebriated evening at the Rose Tavern in Drury Lane.  He is surrounded by prostitutes, one of whom has removed his watch and is handing it to an accomplice.  Two of them are quarreling at the table and one of them sends a jet of wine into the other's face.  A footman brings in a silver tray on which one of the prostitutes, who is divesting herself, will soon dance naked.  Apparently the candle will also be used.  Tom, in his drunken progress hither, has probably had a fight with some constables and beaten them up, robbing them of their lantern and staff which lie on the floor in front of him.  Broken glasses and discarded food lie all around.
