William Hogarth 1697 - 1764.
The
Rake's Progress. Plate II. The Levée.
1735.
Hogarth first achieved fame as an artist through his series of moralistic engravings, commencing with A Harlot's Progress in 1731. This was followed by A Rake's Progress in 1735, Marriage à-la-mode in 1743-5 and Industry and Idleness in 1747 . Originally the sets of pictures were oil paintings which Hogarth subsequently published as engravings. They met with huge success and many copies were printed. The original paintings of A Rake's Progress are extant and are displayed in Sir John Soane's Museum, London. | ||
Having
acquired enormous wealth Tom decides he may live like a prince and he
starts the day with a morning levée. The room is opulently
furnished with paintings in gilded frames, an Italian old master of the
Judgement of Paris, and two pictures of fighting cocks. The
characters who
attend on him are (from left to right) a music master (said to have
been modelled on Handel); a fencing master; a pugilist, Thomas Figg; a
dancing master, Essex, carrying a small violin; a landscape designer,
Charles Bridgeman;
Captain Stab, a bodyguard cum fac-totum, who is offering his services;
a bugler; a jockey who brings the silver bowl which has been won by one
of Rakewell's horses in the steeplechase. The scroll of paper
over the back of the chair, which is not in the original painting, is
said to be a list of patrons of Farinelli, an Italian castrato singer,
to whom
Rakewell has given a splendid snuff box. His name is
therefore inscribed on the list of patrons for all to see.
